Information on how to make online payments

To help protect you from fraud, you may be asked to prove it is really you when making online purchases. There are three ways to prove it’s you. The quickest and easiest way is using the Barclays app1.

  • The Barclays app - Confirm it’s you in just a few clicks via your secure app. If you don’t have the app, you can download it from your app store2. You can also use the Mobile PINsentry feature in the Barclays app3. You can find this in the ‘Quick Links’ drop-down menu once you have logged in

  • SMS one-time passcode4 - At the moment, you just have to enter the code we’ve sent you. In future, in line with new regulations to keep you safe online, you’ll also need to enter your email address too. When you enter your email address and one-time passcode, we’re not checking or storing your email address – we’re simply looking at how you’ve entered it. When you type this information we can identify you in different ways, such as how you hold your device and use your keyboard. This is known as a behavioural biometric check and it means we can confirm it’s you making the payment and keep your purchases safe when you shop online.

  • Barclays PINsentry - If you have a Barclays PINsentry card reader, you can use it to create a code that proves it’s you. You’ll need to have the card reader, debit card and PIN ready when asked to confirm a payment. If you don’t already have a Barclays PINsentry card reader, you can order a new or replacement PINsentry card reader through your online banking or by calling us.

How does it work?

When you want to make a payment, type your card details and confirm them as normal. Then, a verification screen will ask you to confirm it is you, using one of the following options.

Notifications via the Barclays app

  1. Select ‘Barclays app’ and then click ‘Next’

  2. We’ll send a notification to your Barclays app. Open the app and click on the bell icon at the top of your screen to see the payment confirmation request

  3. Once you’ve confirmed it’s you, your payment will be processed.

Mobile PINsentry – the Barclays app

  1. Choose ‘Mobile PINsentry’ and select ‘Next’. You’ll see an eight-digit code that you’ll need shortly

  2. Log in to the Barclays app and select ‘Mobile PINsentry’ in the ‘Quick Links’ section

  3. Select ‘Respond’

  4. For security reasons, repeat the verification you use to log into the app

  5. Enter the eight-digit code received in step one

  6. Your Mobile PINsentry will create an eight-digit code. Type this into the ‘Verified by VISA’ window on your screen and click ‘Enter’

  7. After typing in the code, follow the instructions to complete your payment.

SMS message

  1. Select ‘Receive a code by text message’ and then tap ‘Next’

  2. You’ll see a new message on the verification screen telling you that a one-time verification code will be sent to your phone

  3. You’ll get a text message with a code to type into the verification screen
     
  4. In future, in line with new regulations to keep you safe online, you’ll also need to enter your email address too.   5. Once you’ve typed in this code, follow the instructions to finalise your payment.

How to prepare
Make sure we have your up-to-date mobile phone number. We can only text verification codes to the number you have given us. You can add or update your mobile number anytime via the Barclays app, online banking or by giving us a call.

Your PINsentry card reader

  1. Select ‘PINsentry card reader’ and then tap ‘Next’. You’ll be given an eight-digit code that you’ll need in a second

  2. Put your card into the card reader, with the chip end going in first, then click ‘Respond’ on the keypad

  3. Type your card’s PIN into the card reader and select ‘Enter’. Then enter the eight-digit code provided by the Verified by Visa window on your screen and select ‘Enter’

  4. Your card reader will display a new eight-digit code. Type this into the space shown on the Verified by Visa window and press ‘Submit’

  5. After typing in the code, follow the instructions to finalise your payment.

How to prepare
You’ll need to be equipped with your PINsentry card reader, debit card and PIN to prove it is really you making a payment. If your card reader is lost or broken or you need an accessible card reader, you can order one through your online banking or by contacting us.
